According to BusinessKorea, Samsung Display is considering bringing forward its exit from the liquid crystal display (LCD) business to June 2022 from its planned end of 2022.
Samsung Display is producing LCD panels for TVs at L8-2, a large-scale LCD production line at the Asan campus in Chungcheongnam-do. Samsung Display will make the final decision after consultation with its largest customer and sister company Samsung Electronics, the report said.
Samsung Electronics has decided to increase the number of low-priced LCD panels it buys from BOE, AUO and Innolux to increase its market share and price competitiveness.

It is reported that Samsung Display has decided to focus on developing QD organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels instead of LCDs. Since the end of 2021, the company has been manufacturing large-scale QD displays (2200 x 2500 mm) on the Gen 8.5 production line (Q1) at the Asan campus. However, its shipments in 2021 are small, with only 720,000 55-inch panels and 1.08 million 65-inch panels, accounting for only 3.6 percent of Samsung Electronics' annual TV shipments. Accordingly, Samsung Display is accelerating the transition to next-generation displays, converting its LCD production lines to QD display production lines.
Meanwhile, unlike Samsung Display, LG Display has decided to continue producing LCD TV panels at its Guangzhou, China factory. However, the company will also accelerate the switch to OLED displays, having decided to reduce overall LCD production by converting LCD supply for information and communication (IT) equipment such as laptops and tablets to OLED supply.
